A Christmas Gift that was a winner!
This was one of my son's Christmas gifts and he really thinks it is one
fine book for beginners and even those more experienced in digital
photography. He said it is easy to understand and the author gives some
solid tips and illustrations.

Excellent Book for Beginners
I've purchased and read both volume 1 and 2 of Scott Kelby's books,
which are also excellent books, but if you've read them, they're more a
quick series of facts or things to do. I felt a learned a lot from
them, but was left wanting more information on the "guts" of
photography. Quite simply, this book delivers. For someone who is
trying to gain an understanding of how their camera works and what
techniques should be used to get the best photo, this is a must-buy.
The chapter on exposure alone is well worth the cost of the book (and
my favorite). I can't more highly recommend this for a beginning
photographer!

Great Buy
Along with this book I also bought "Understanding Exposure" by Bryan
Peterson and I have to say that this book teaches more than that book
and it has graphs to help you understand better. I highly recommend it
for people starting out as a new photographer that is trying to get off
of Auto mode. I am still learning but this book is helping. Get
it!

Excellent for Beginners
This is an excellent book for beginners (although I suspect that
some advanced photographers may be able to benefit from it). It
covers all the essentials, from explaining the basics of exposure
and understanding light, to very useful advice on composition.
I purchased this book together with Scott Kelby's first volume and
found them both to be extremely useful and quite complementary.
